The Somme
department extends from the centre of Picardy to the Channel coasts.
The area between the Bay of the Somme and the Bay of Authie which constitutes "Coastal Picardy" has one of the biggest tidal estuaries in northern Europe. This very large area benefits from a carefully protected fauna and flora in peace allowing different animal species, notably birds, to live in peace together with others as for examples in the ornithological park of Marquenterre.
The Somme takes its name from the river that crosses it. It is a river around which the history of the department was progressively formed during the centuries, a calm river in an open territory, at the crossroads of Europe, a territory which was, naturally, a place of where battles took place during the World Wars.
The Somme country is proud of its great diversity of landscapes and the beauty of its historical towns.
Amiens, capital city of Picardy, has a Gothic heart : one of the most beautiful cathedrals of the world with a flamboyant Gothic style.
MontDidier, Péronne, Abbeville and many other towns of the Somme department also offer a reception for tourism that is equal in quality to its patrimonial richness.
By visiting the department, you will taste the pleasure of the table, a gastronomy created around a very large array of produces coming from the sea, fields and forests.
