The Aisne
department takes its name from the river which crosses it, an affluent of the Oise. The department is close to Paris (45 minutes far from Roissy) and the Aisne is located between the United Kingdom and Belgium. Laon is its capital city. The Aisne has a prestigious rich past whose features are always present. Soissons, one of the important towns of the Aisne, was in the Carolingian period the capital city of France. Like the other departments, the Aisne has a lot of cathedrals, abbeys and castles. But the Aisne keeps in its heart the memory of recent wars such as the great War of 1914-1918 which has marked forever its lands. The Caverne du Dragon (Dragon's Cavern), along the Chemin des Dames, is one among other witnesses to that period. Today, the battlefield have given away to a welcoming natural and green landscape. The Thiérache territory is a beautiful illustration. In this luxurious land fine products such as the Maroilles cheese were born. At some distance Champagne region greatly contributed to the French and Picard gastronomy. Thus the Aisne, this haven peace where lived a lot of notables such as Jean de la Fontaine, Racine, Alexandre Dumas, Paul Claudel, Matisse or Jean Mermoz, has managed to preserve its roots : a region with character, a country of tales, history, a land of art and culture.
