Amiens

Amiens , the capital city of Picardy, one of the most important towns for Arts and history in France, built almost a 1000 years ago around a majestic Gothic cathedral, Amiens where Jules Verne lived, counts today 130,000 inhabitants.

The Amiens cathedral, the highest in France, listed as a world-class heritage by Unesco, was built starting in 1220 under the direction of the architect Robert de Luzarches and his successor Thomas de Courmont. It was finished in 1269. This rapidity of construction resulted in a unity of the purest Gothic style.
The cathedral has undergone some successive reparations that allowed it to be perfectly preserved during the centuries. Currently, patches of polychromy were found on portals and sculptures during its restauration with the laser technique. A show of sound and lights reconstitutes now the original colours of Amiens cathedral.

Nearby, Old Amiens can be visited : the St-Leu quarter with its discrete charm blending café terraces, boutiques and antiquaires. Along the banks of the Somme, when night comes, serenity gives way to a busy night life centre with clubs, bars and restaurants with their heated terraces in winter.

Another site to visit during your trip : the Hortillonnages or aquatic gardens. They are old marshes divided into small gardens that flowers and vegetables of high quality. The Hortillonnages date from the Roman period. They cover today 300 hectares and are separated by canals, and they continue all the way into Old Amiens.
A flower and vegetable market from these marshes has taken place in the town since a long time ago.

Amiens is a magic town of traditions associated with dynamism an important regional capital.
